Canvas Integration
Beyond grades
Grades tell you where you've been. Assignments tell you where you're going.
HAC says you have a 96.2 in Physics. That's a rearview mirror — it says nothing about what's coming. Canvas tells you the Unit 10 Exam is in 14 days, there are 4 homework assignments before it, a quiz on Pipes next week, and two TEKS standards haven't been assessed yet. That's the difference between knowing your grade and understanding your trajectory.
WITHOUT CANVAS
Physics: 96.2%
That's all you know.
WITH CANVAS
Physics: 96.2%
├─ HW #1 due Mar 27 (Daily)
├─ HW #2 due Mar 31 (Daily)
├─ Pipes Quiz due Apr 7 (Quiz)
└─ Unit 10 Exam due Apr 10 (Major)
Exam in 14 days. 2 TEKS standards left.
How it works
You generate a Canvas personal access token — about 30 seconds inside your Canvas settings. Paste it into Gradovate, and we pull your courses, assignments, and due dates through Canvas's REST API. No browser automation. No scraping. No passwords. A direct, authenticated connection to your school's LMS.
Privacy
Your token is encrypted with AES-256 before it touches our database. Assignments are fetched in real time when you open the app, then discarded. Disconnect Canvas from settings at any time and the token is deleted immediately. No residual data. No backups. Gone.
Update — August 17, 2026. Canvas is not connected. The flow described below asked each student to generate a personal access token and paste it in, and we no longer support that: it hands an app more access than it needs, with no way for a school to see who holds one or to revoke it. Conroe ISD has since disabled student token generation entirely, so the flow would not work today regardless.
If Canvas returns it will use OAuth, where a student approves access on Canvas's own screen and their district can revoke it at any time. That requires a developer key issued by the district, which we have requested and do not hold. We are not able to say when or whether it will be granted.
Everything below describes how the integration worked in March 2026. It is left standing as a record, not as a description of the app today. Our Privacy Policy is the authority on what data we hold.
Correction — August 11, 2026. The words "No backups. Gone." were wrong when this post was published, and we are leaving the original sentence above rather than quietly editing it. Disconnecting Canvas does delete your token from our production database immediately, and that part was accurate. But residual copies persist in our database provider's automated backups for up to 7 days before they age out, so "no backups" was never true of any data we hold. Our Privacy Policy states the current retention and deletion terms, and it is the authority where this post and it disagree.
Why this matters for the bigger picture
Grades plus assignments is the data feed that powers everything downstream — the AI analysis, the GPA projections, and the college match engine that came later in the year. Canvas was the second half of the foundation.
